Navigating MOQ and Lead Times: A Procurement Manager’s Guide

MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) is often the biggest friction point in B2B procurement. But it's not arbitrary. It's about machine setup times and raw material efficiency.
The Economics of MOQ
For a custom notebook, the machine setup for offset printing takes 2 hours. If you order 100 units, the setup cost per unit is astronomical. At 1,000 units, it becomes negligible. That's why the price drop from 500 to 1,000 units is often 40%.
Lead Time Reality Check
"Rush orders" are the enemy of quality. Glue needs 24 hours to cure properly. Ink needs time to dry before binding. Pushing a 20-day production into 10 days often means skipping QC steps.
Negotiation Strategy
Instead of fighting the MOQ, ask for "split shipments." Order the MOQ of 3,000 to get the best price, but have them ship 1,000 now and store the rest for Q3 and Q4 distribution.
